Virginia Preschool Initiative

Greene County Public Schools offers a high-quality, full-day preschool program for eligible
four-year-olds through the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI). The program follows the same
calendar as the rest of the school division and is housed at Nathanael Greene Primary School. All
Greene County families are welcome to apply. To be considered for enrollment, families must
submit a completed application along with proof of residency and income. School bus
transportation is available for all accepted students.

The VPI program uses PreK On My Way, a research-based curriculum aligned with Virginia’s
Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), designed to support growth in language,
literacy, math, and social-emotional skills—preparing children for a successful transition to
kindergarten.

Head Start

Skyline CAP’s Head Start preschool program prepares children for kindergarten by nurturing
their development in a safe, supportive learning environment. They focus on the whole
child—cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically—while also supporting the family’s
path to self-sufficiency.

Who Can Apply?

Head Start accepts applications year-round from income-eligible families. Children must be three
or four years old on or before September 30 of the enrollment year. Children with disabilities are
encouraged to apply and may be eligible for services starting on their third birthday. Head Start
also considers factors that may place families at risk.

The Head Start program for Greene County is located in Stanardsville. For more information on
this program, please visit: https://skylinecap.org/headstart/ or contact the Skyline CAP office at
