Inclement Weather & Closing Information
Closing and Delays
At Greene County Public Schools (GCPS), the safety of our students and staff is our top priority when making decisions about inclement weather. We closely monitor conditions and gather information from various reliable sources to determine whether a school closure or delay is warranted.
Factors We Monitor
- Road conditions for buses, students, and staff
- Impacts of a recent storm and/or inclement weather
- Current and projected weather forecasts (precipitation, low temperatures, wind, etc.)
- Input from local Law Enforcement & Emergency Management Services, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and other local agencies
Our county spans nearly 156 square miles of beautiful rural and suburban landscapes, creating unique challenges when assessing weather impacts across the division. We strive to make the best decision to ensure everyone's safety.
Schedule Options
GCPS considers three options when bad weather becomes a factor in the school schedule:
- Delay the opening of school by two hours.
- Cancel school for the day.
- Early Dismissal (Based on projected forecast changes)
Decision and Communication Timeline
Every inclement weather event is unique. When adverse weather conditions arise, GCPS aims to make and communicate any changes to the school schedule as early as possible, allowing families and staff ample time to adjust their plans.
