Religious Exemption

Although parents are providing instruction to their child at home through this option, the process to request religious exemption is different than if you choose to homeschool.

Parents seeking a religious exemption must petition the School Board and show that, by reason of bona fide religious training or belief, the pupil, together with his/her parents, is conscientiously opposed to attendance at school.  The term bona fide religious training or belief "does not include essentially political, sociological, or philosophical views or a merely personal code." (22.1-245.B.1, Code of Virginia

Parents will typically make this petition by submitting a letter explaining their desire for religious exemption to the division's Homeschool Coordinator.

Please note that approvals for religious exemption are per child and not per family.
